Blazers Conclude Competition At Vanderbilt Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The UAB track and field team concluded its competition at the Vanderbilt Invitational Saturday. The Blazers ended the two-day meet with a total of 10 top-10 finishes, including one first-place and two second-place finishes.
Senior Whitney Mays and freshman Stephanie Gammon recorded two top 10 finishes on Friday. Mays won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:42.11, while Gammon took third in the 3000-meter run by finishing in 10:12.07.
Highlighting the Blazers on Saturday was senior Penny Shields placing second in the triple jump with a mark of 12.28 meters.
Also earning a second-place finish was the 4x400 meter relay team of freshman Jacinta Scruggs, senior Genoah Collins, junior Alina Varpiotaite and senior Tara Colvin with a time of 3:43.70.
Colvin and Scruggs also finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 400 meters with times of 54.88 and 55.96.
In the 800 meters, Varpiotaite took fifth place at 2:08.33 and Collins finished sixth by clocking a time of 2:10.21.
Varpiotaite's time in the 800 meters qualified her for the regional meet. It marks the second event she has regionally qualified for this season, having previously qualified with the 4x400 meter relay team.
The Blazers' 4x100 relay squad, consisting of freshman Samantha Hamilton, sophomore Katrina Harrell, senior Erika Russ and Scruggs, finished in 47.01 to take seventh place.
In the final event of the competition, freshman Erica Whitby placed fifth and tied her personal best with a mark of 1.65 meters in the high jump.
UAB will be back in action on May 3 at the Rebel Classic in Oxford, Miss.
