Relay Teams Regionally Qualify, Set School Records

AUSTIN, Texas --- The UAB track and field team set two school records and regionally qualified for one event Saturday on the final day of 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
The regional qualifying and school record came in the finals of the 4x400-meter relay. UAB placed second in their respective section with a time of 3:38.51.
The Blazers also set a new school mark in the distance medley relay, finishing fourth in a time of 11:34.37.
"The girls ran out of their mind this weekend," head coach Ray Stanfield said. "It was a great atmosphere to compete all weekend and the girls stepped up big time."
The school record set in the 4x400-meter relay by Jacinta Scruggs, Genoah Collins, Alina Varpiotaite and Tara Colvin broke the mark of 3:42.28 set in 2005. The race was held before the premier event of the meet before an crowd of 30,000.
The DMR squad of Collins, Colvin, Varpiotaite and Whitney Mays shattered the school record of 11:43.63 established in 2005.
UAB had a strong finish to the meet, where Mays placed third and qualified for the regional meet in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The 4x800-meter relay team placed third Thursday and also set a school record.
The Mt. Sac Relays and Ole Miss Invitational are on tap for the team next weekend.
