BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- UAB senior distance runner Elizabeth Ambrus has withdrawn from the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Head coach Ray Stanfield said that Ambrus had been fighting an illness and was not fully prepared to run in the longest distance race for college athletes.
"Obviously we would like to be in Des Moines getting ready to run Thursday," Stanfield said. "It's tough for her to go out this way because of what she has done here."
Ambrus' UAB career has been filled with many accomplishments. She took home indoor All-America honors in the 5,000-meter run this year, the 2006 Conference USA Cross Country Athlete of the Year as well as the individual title at the conference meet, and three individual indoor conference titles in the 5K run.
Ambrus qualified for the NCAA meet at the Stanford Invitational on April 5. She posted a time of 34:17.65, which was the 26th fastest time in the field of runners that qualified for the 10K run. She ran in the 10K once more at the C-USA Outdoor Championship.
