BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- UAB senior distance runner Elizabeth Ambrus received notification Tuesday that she has qualified to compete in the 10,000-meter run at the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Ambrus enters the national meet with a qualifying time of 34:17.65, the 26th fastest in the nation this year. She set the mark at the Stanford Invitational on April 5, one of two 10K runs she participated in this outdoor season.
This year's outdoor national championship, June 11-14 in Des Moines, Iowa, marks the second 10K national event that the Arlington Heights, Ill. native will run in. Earlier this year at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship she earned All-America status in the 5K.
In 2006, Ambrus qualified for two NCAA Outdoor Championship events, eventually choosing to compete in the 10,000-meter run over the 5,000-meter event. That year she placed 23rd, with a then school- and personal-record of 34:07.95.
She also ran a 10K race last month at the Conference USA Championship, where she finished fourth (37:32.07).
In her All-America performance at the indoor national championship in March, Ambrus finished eighth posting a career-best and school record time of 16:18.92 in the event. It was the first such award for her.
Throughout her career, Ambrus has received many accolades highlighted by her 2006 Conference USA Cross Country Individual Championship and C-USA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year. In addition, she took the league's individual title in the indoor 5K for the third time in her career.
