JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The UAB track and field team took top honors in three separate events at the Niswonger Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn. on Saturday afternoon. The first-place finishes came in the 60-meter hurdles, the 3,000-meter run and the distance medley relay.
Junior Timara McMillan led the way for the Blazers in the 60-meter hurdles, as UAB had three runners finish in the top five. McMillan's first-place finish time of 8.85 was a new personal best. Sophomore Samantha Hamilton also set a personal best, 8.94, and finished tied for second. Sophomore Janelle Gaines finished fifth in a time of 9.02.
Freshman Rhiannon Johns set a new UAB freshman record as she took first place in the 3,000-run. Her time of 9:52.96 broke senior Elizabeth Hilligoss's 2005 record of 10:03.00. Sophomore Stephanie Gammon and junior Kristina Olsen finished fifth (10:19.80) and eighth (10:33.00), respectively.
Sophomore Veronica Johnson and freshmen Kristina Vaughn, Lucy Taylor and Katie Jorgensen captured first place in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:24.86. The time would have set a new UAB school record, but due to an official error, the first leg was run a lap short.
Other highlights from the meet were junior Katrina Harrell's fourth-place finish in the 60-meter dash (7.89), McMillan's eighth-place finish in the long jump (5.45m) and a fourth-place finish by the 4x400-meter relay squad (3:55.88).
The UAB track and field team returns to action Feb. 5 in South Bend, Ind. at the Meyo Invitational.
