UAB Has Strong Showing At Southern Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB track and field team opened its 2009 outdoor schedule in fine fashion at Birmingham Southern's Southern Invitational on Saturday. The Blazers posted seven top-three performances on the day.
"This was a good meet for us," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "We ran well and posted some nice performances. It's a great way to start to the season for us."
The highlight of the meet for UAB was capturing the top-three spots in the 5,000-meter run. Sandra Lundberg finished first and set a new UAB freshman track and field record with a time of 17:23.00. Stephanie Gammon set a new personal best with a time of 17:34.11, which was good for second place. Rhiannon Johns took third place for the Blazers in a time of 18:00.63.
Other top performances for the Blazers included, Alina Varpiotaite finishing first in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:44.42. Timara McMillan and Samantha Hamilton finished second (14.47) and third (14.75), respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles. Bianca LeBlanc finished second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:18.88.
The UAB track and field team returns to action March 26-28 at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala. hosted by the University of Alabama.
