BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB track and field head coach Ray Stanfield announced Thursday the signing of two athletes for the 2009-10 season.
Akira McSwain and Angel Watson have signed National Letters of Intent to compete for the Green and Gold next season.
"We are very excited to have Akira and Angel on our team," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "They have performed well during their high school careers and will bring a lot of depth and talent to our squad."
Akira McSwain, a native of Nashville, Tenn., is regarded one of the top heptathletes in the nation for the class of 2009. She was an all-state performer for Hunter's Lane High School in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles in 2008. At the Tennessee State High School meet in 2008, McSwain captured third place in the pentathlon. In the same year, she took first place in the heptathlon at the USA Youth Championships.
Angel Watson of Mobile, Ala., will bring talent and experience to UAB after having competed on the national level. She is a former two-time USA Track & Field Junior Olympic National Champion in the 200-meter dash, which she won in 2001 and 2004. As a junior at St. Paul's Episcopal, Watson placed second in the 200-meter dash and fourth in the 400-meter dash at the Alabama State High School meet.
