Future Blazer Wins Illinois Title

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Future Blazer Amanda Whowell posted a first-place finish in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:04.84 this past weekend at the 18th Annual Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic in Bloomington, Ill. on March 28. With the time, Whowell shaved nearly six seconds off her personal best in the event and was just shy of the state record, 5:04.10.
Whowell is a three-time indoor and outdoor state championship qualifier for Rolling Meadows High School in Rolling Meadows, Ill.. As a junior, she emerged as a standout in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, winning the 2008 Illinois State Junior Olympics with a time of 7:17. She followed that performance with a third place finish in the same event at the 2008 United States Junior National Championships, crossing the finish line in 7:02.76.
Whowell also proved a solid cross country performer during her high school career. She finished 23rd at the 2007 USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 20:21.51.
