UAB Claims Top Finishes At Mississippi Open

OXFORD, Miss. - The UAB track and field team had an impressive showing here Saturday at the Mississippi Open hosted by Ole Miss, including six top-five finishes on the day.
Kendel Hood posted a first-place finish in the 1,500-meter run and Sandra Lundberg claimed first place in the 5,000-meter run.
"We had a good day," said UAB interim head coach Kurt Thomas. "The girls ran great. This was a good warm-up against some top teams before we head to the Conference USA Championships."
Hood set a new personal best and took first place with a time of 4:36.04 in the 1,500-meter run. The time broke the senior's previous best by more than 12 seconds.
Lundberg claimed first in the 5,000-meter run. Her time of 17:10.35 shaved nearly 13 seconds off the UAB freshman record which Lundberg set earlier this season at the Southern Invitational with a time a of 17:23.00. Stephanie Gammon finished second in the event with a personal best of 17:27.25.
Other top-five finishes for UAB included Erica Whitby claiming second in the high jump with a height of 1.60m while Rhiannon Johns finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:19.18. Kristina Vaughn finished fourth behind Johns with a time of 11:31.48.
The Blazers will take the week off before closing out the season at the 2009 Conference USA Outdoor Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The competition will run May 14-16.
