LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Two members of the UAB track & field team, Nora Mehl and Samantha Hamilton, were unable to qualify in their respective events at the NCAA Track & Field Mideast Regional here on Saturday and will not advance to the NCAA Track & Field Championships in June.
"I'm very proud of all these girls," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "To qualify for the regional meet is an accomplishment in itself. We showed that we can perform well against some of the nation's best athletes."
In the high jump, Mehl posted a height of 1.74m (5' 8.5") and finished seventh overall. The seventh-place finish qualifies her for an at-large selection to the NCAA Championships. Heather Davis of Louisiana-Monroe won the competition with a leap of 1.81m (5' 11.25"). Mehl's season now comes to a close after picking up Indoor and Outdoor All-Conference USA honors this year, including the league's title in the heptathlon.
In the triple jump, Hamilton finished 12th overall with a jump of 12.02m (39' 5.25").
On Friday, Alina Varpiotaite finished 19th overall in the 800-meter run.
