Blazers Finish Day One Of Niswonger Invitational

Johnson City, Tenn. - The UAB track and field team concluded day one of the two-day Niswonger Invitational Friday evening.
During Friday's competition, Lauren Fayen won the 800m race with a time of 2:16.20. The Blazers also had five runners qualify for the finals in their respective events.
"I thought everyone ran extremely well today," UAB interim head coach Kurt Thomas said. "Our hard work paid off with several girls making it to the finals. The highlight of the day was Lauren Fayen winning the 800m, but so many of the other girls ran well too, such as Lucy Taylor in the 800m."
Freshman Akira McSwain clocked a time of 8.88 in the 60m hurdle prelims, which qualified her for the finals Saturday. Junior Samantha Hamilton also qualified for the finals with a time of 9.06.
A pair of freshmen qualified for the finals in the 60m dash. Shakima Knox ran to a sixth-place finish (7.65), while Angel Watson finished 14th (7.76).
In the 200m dash prelims, freshman Angel Watson finished fourth with a time of 24.87, which qualified her for the finals Saturday.
Junior Nora Mehl finished third in the high jump with a leap of 1.74m.
"We are still young, but we made a lot of progress today," Thomas said. "UAB has a big day tomorrow and I'm looking forward to seeing what the girls do."
Competition at the Niswonger Invitational resumes Saturday morning at 8 a.m. ET with the 5000m finals.
