BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB interim head coach Kurt Thomas announced the 2011 UAB track & field schedule Tuesday, which features nationally recognized meets such as Arkansas' Tyson Invite during the indoor season and the Penn Relays during the outdoor campaign.
"I think we have put together a very good schedule," Thomas said. "Our girls will have opportunities to compete close to home, but they will also get to compete at other great universities on some of the best tracks in the country."
The Blazers will open their indoor season at the Middle Tennessee Christmas Invitational on Dec. 11 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. UAB will then compete at the Saluki Open hosted by Southern Illinois Jan. 14-15 in Carbondale, Ill., before finishing out the month at the Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana Jan. 21-22.
The Blazers will continue their indoor season at the Niswonger Invite Feb. 4-5 at East Tennessee State. The weekend of Feb. 11, UAB will send its distance runners to the Tiger Paw Invite hosted by Clemson, while the rest of the team will compete at the Tyson Invite at Arkansas.
The Conference USA Indoor Championships will be held Feb. 25-26 at Houston. After the league championships, the Blazers will compete at the Last Chance Qualifier March 4-5 at Notre Dame. The NCAA Indoor Championships will be held March 11-13 at Texas A&M.
The Blazers will open the 2011 outdoor season at the Southern Invitational hosted by Birmingham-Southern March 11-12. On April 1, UAB will race at the Bulldog Invite hosted by Mississippi State, before traveling to Knoxville, Tenn. the following week to compete in the four-day Sea Ray Relays hosted by Tennessee.
The Green and Gold will continue their outdoor schedule at the Vanderbilt Invite, which will be held April 22-23 in Nashville, Tenn. The Blazers will then take a week off before traveling to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
"Penn is the oldest and largest track meet in the world," Thomas said. "It is a priviledge to run there, and we will give our athletes that are ready the chance to run against the best in the country at Franklin Field."
UAB will have a final tune-up for the league meet at the Smokey Mountain Invite hosted by Tennessee on May 7. The C-USA Outdoor Championships will be held May 12-15 at Rice in Houston, Texas.
The preliminary rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Championships will be held May 26-28 at Indiana and the NCAA Championships will be June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
