NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Jamarr Sanders scored 19 points to lead the UAB Blazers to a 70-65 overtime win over the Arkansas Razorbacks in a non-conference showdown at Verizon Arena.
"We showed a lot of toughness tonight," UAB head coach Mike Davis said. "For our guys to continue to battle and fight throughout this game showed me a lot. Arkansas hit a big-time shot to tie the game and had all the momentum heading into overtime. But we kept our cool, hit some shots and made some key defensive stops and were able to walk out of this with a win against a good Arkansas team."
Ovie Soko also added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Blazers (4-1), while Cameron Moore chipped in with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Aaron Johnson, who entered the game as the nation's assist leader, also got involved, netting 10 points and dishing out eight assists. Robert Williams checked in with 10 points, including a pair of crucial three-pointers, and six rebounds.
Arkansas (3-1) was paced by Delvon Johnson who tallied 18 points and 13 rebounds in a losing effort. Jeff Peterson also added 13 points, while Rotnei Clarke and Julysses Nobles netted 10 points apiece.
Despite shooting just 8-of-23 from the floor in the first half, UAB still managed to take a 21-20 lead at the break.
Arkansas fought back in the second stanza, knocking down 11-of-13 free-throw attempts, but it was Peterson's three-pointer as time expired that sent the game into overtime tied at 57-57.
The Blazers took control of the game in the overtime period, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor, en route to a five-point victory.
"I thought in the second half we really fought hard," said Arkansas head coach John Pelphrey. "It was a really back and forth battle and those guys (UAB) made some great shots."
Three-point shooting proved to be the difference in this contest, as UAB outscored the Razorbacks 21-9 from long distance.
Next up for the Blazers, UAB begins a hectic stretch of four games in seven days with a road contest at instate foe Troy on Monday night at 7 p.m. In addition to game against the Trojans, the Blazers will host Jacksonville State (Wednesday at 7 p.m.), travel to Georgia (Friday at 6 p.m. and host Kent State (Sunday at 7 p.m.) next week.
