BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB track and field team will prepare for its upcoming indoor season by competing in the Birmingham Ice Breaker Invitational Wednesday and Thursday at the brand new Birmingham CrossPlex. The invitational, which UAB will co-host with Samford and Birmingham Southern, will be the first-ever track meet at that facility located in Fair Park.
The Birmingham CrossPlex features a state-of-the-art indoor track stadium with seating for 4,000 people. The track facility incorporates a 200-meter hydraulically banked Mondo Super X track, making it one of only six in the United States and one of eight world-wide. Other features include an eight-lane sprint track and a four-lane warm-up track. There is a double apparatus for all field events -- shot put, long jump, triple jump, pole vault and high jump.
The Blazers will compete in the world-class facility five times over the course of the indoor season, including the Conference USA Indoor Championship, which UAB will host Feb. 25-26.
The Birmingham Ice Breaker features 16 teams, including Conference USA members Southern Miss and Tulane along with in-state teams Alabama State, Alabama A&M, Jacksonville State, South Alabama and Stillman College.
UAB will compete in the 60-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter, 60-meter hurdles, 4x400-meter relay and the 3,000-meter races. The Blazers will also participate in the long, high and triple jumps along with the pole vault and pentathlon.
The action will begin Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. with the multi-events. The competition continues on Thursday with the 60-meter hurdle preliminary round at 10 a.m. and concludes at approximately 7:30 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay.
Results will be posted after each day's competition on www.UABsports.com.
