BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB sophomore Renay Ransaw placed sixth in the pentathlon on the first day of competition at the Birmingham Ice Breaker held at the state-of-the-art Birmingham CrossPlex.
Ransaw topped her previous record of 3,038 points set at the 2011 C-USA Indoor Championship with a new personal-best 3,156 points through five events (60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800 meters).
The Montgomery, Ala. native placed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.20) and recorded fourth-place finishes in the high jump (1.55m) and shot put (10.16m).
She closed the day with a third-place effort in the long jump (5.53m) and crossed the line in 3:00.54 for 11th place in the 800 meters.
“Renay did well,” UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. “It was good to see her jump and hurdle well. It’s good to see where they are training-wise and plan for the rest of the season.”
Junior Akira McSwain also competed in the penthalon and finished first in the shot put (11.06m), second in the high jump (1.61m), third in the 60-meter hurdles (9.02) and fourth in the long jump (5.35m).
McSwain did not race the 800 meters and therefore didn’t place in the pentathlon.
“The girls had a pretty good start to their season. Both girls had some very solid performances across the board. Coach [Kiamesha] Otey and Akira decided to use the Pentathlon as a training tool. Akira will come back and hurdle tomorrow, and run the 4x400-meter relay, so it’ll be two great training days,” Thomas said.
The action continues Thursday with the 60-meter hurdle preliminary round at 10 a.m. and concludes at approximately 7:15 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay.
“We are looking forward to tomorrow and having the rest of the team compete and are ready to have a great meet tomorrow,” Thomas said.
