Knox, Vaughn Highlight Blazers' First Day At Vanderbilt Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ----- UAB sophomore Shakima Knox and junior Kristina Vaughn both recorded top five finishes Friday to highlight the Blazers' performances on a light first day of competition at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
Knox, from Tuscaloosa, Ala., finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.74 while Madison, Ala. product Vaughn was fifth in the 1,500-meter run at 4:33.28.
VCU's Quina Fortune was the winner in the 200, clocking a time of 23.38. Colleen Newhart, running for Fleet Feet, finished first in the 1,500 at 4:24.01.
UAB's Lauren Fayen, a junior from Wellington, New Zealand, placed 12th in the 1,500 with a time of 4:37.53.
In the javelin, UAB registered seventh and eighth-place finishes, both from competitors not accustomed to the event. Nora Mehl, UAB's top-flight high jumper, was seventh while sprinter/jumper Akira McSwain, competing in her hometown, was eighth.
The meet schedule will pick up considerably Saturday when competition starts with field events at 10:00 a.m. CT.
