UAB Track Team Finishes Competition At C-USA Championships

HOUSTON ----- The UAB women's track and field team wrapped up competition Sunday at the 2011 Conference USA Championships.
The Blazers had several competitors score points on the final day of the four-day meet at Holloway Field/Ley Track facility on the Rice University campus.
UAB junior Lauren Fayen placed fifth in the 800-meter run as she clocked a time of 2:10.56. SMU's Louisa Lindh won the event at 2:08.50.
In the first running event of the evening, the Blazers' 4x100-meter relay team of Thelyssa Katchen, Kyana White, Shakima Knox and Alexis Bates finished sixth with a time of 46.55. UCF set a C-USA meet record with a 43.42 time.
Sophomore Rachel Harley also scored for the Blazers as the Mason, Ohio native finished in sixth place at 1:01.51. UCF's Jackie Coward won the race with a conference meet record 57.59.
The Blazers also got points in the 5,000-meter run as junior Clara Cid placed sixth with a time of 17:12.65. Tulsa's Paula Whiting was the 5k winner with a time of 16:36.07. UAB's Stephanie Gammon was 14th at 18:00.66.
UAB's 4x400-meter relay team of White, Katchen, Akira McSwain and Veronicia Johnson placed ninth (3:49.41) in the final event of the night.
UAB finished ninth in the final team standings with 36.5 points. UCF captured the conference title with 157 points, followed by SMU with 119.
