UAB Set For 2012 C-USA Outdoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –The UAB track and field team is set to compete at the 2012 C-USA Outdoor Championships on Friday-Sunday hosted by Tulane in New Orleans.

“We are all excited to get to this point in the season. For the whole team, this is the culmination of the entire year -all the training leads up to now.” Head coach Kurt Thomas said. “We have had a lot of good things happen throughout the season, and we hope that continues this weekend in New Orleans.”
The action starts Friday at 3 p.m. at Tad Gormley Stadium with the first four events of the women’s Heptathlon. UAB’s Akira McSwain will compete in the Heptathlon. Shannon Simpson and Clara Cid will compete in the 10,000 meters at 8:45 p.m. to wrap up the first day of competition.
Saturday will see a full day’s competition. The Heptathlon and Decathlon multi-events will wrap up at 11 a.m., followed by the long jump, shot put and men’s high jump schedule to start at 5 p.m.
The preliminaries for the 1,500m, 400m, 100m, 800m, 200m, and the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles start at 6 p.m. and the 3,000-meter steeplechase will conclude day two’s competition.
“We are looking for Akira, Sarah Hudak, Lucy Taylor, Angel Watson, Rachel Harley and both relays to do big things for us,” Thomas said. “We have to really focus in each event to make finals and put us in a position to score points.”
The Blazers have 11 athletes competing in the preliminary rounds in hopes of running in a final round on Sunday, starting with the 1,500 meters at 6:15 p.m.
The men’s javelin will start off the field events on Sunday at 11 a.m., followed by the 4x100-meter relay at 6 p.m. The final event of the three-day competition is the women’s 4x400-meter relay at 9:10 p.m.
“This conference is one of the toughest in the country, and you have to earn every spot in the finals,” Thomas said. “I think these ladies are ready for the challenge."
