BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB athletics department honored the UAB track and field team on Thursday in a reception, recognizing Elinor Kirk and Neal Tisher for their success at this year's NCAA Championships.
"I can't thank the UAB athletics department enough for the support they showed today," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "Anytime you have success and it gets recognized by others, it's humbling and appreciated."
Both Kirk and Tisher had very successful final campaigns in their competitive careers and will now turn their attention to medical school. Kirk, who left Wales to attend UAB and run as a member of the track and field team, will soon return back to her home country and continue her medical school degree. The Swansea, Wales native will also represent UAB in the Commonwealth Games this summer in Scotland, running for Team Wales in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs.
Tisher, an All-American transfer from Ole Miss, reset the Blazers' pole vault records all season and capped off her competitive career with a showing at the championships. She just completed her first year of medical school and will continue pursuing her degree in Birmingham.
"So many people did not know Eli's story about putting off final years of medical school to come here and run," Thomas said. "Many did not know how Neal ended up here from Ole Miss to our medical school. So, it's great to share their story and to show the great examples of student-athletes that they are and that we have on our team."
