UAB Volleyball Sweeps Alabama A&M in Straight Sets

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -In a total team effort, the UAB volleyball team swept Alabama A&M in straight sets Tuesday evening in Bartow Arena.
“Everyone on the floor contributed in some way,” said head coach Kerry Messersmith. “That’s what is so much fun. I think our kids played with good intensity and energy throughout the match, and that’s what we’ve had trouble with in the past.”
The Blazers (8-15) dominated Alabama A&M (3-18) throughout the match and did not allow the Lady Bulldogs to record 20 or more points in a single set.
Alabama A&M opened the match with back-to-back kills before junior libero Emma Schroer recorded her first kill of the season to bring the Blazers within one, 2-1.
The squads tied three times before UAB took an 11-10 lead with a kill from junior Gabby Deshotel. The Blazers never relinquished that lead and won the first set, 25-18.
The Green and Gold opened set two with a 3-0 run before the Lady Bulldogs battled back with three-straight points of their own. Alabama A&M gained a 5-4 advantage off a Deshotel attack error.
UAB regained the lead, 6-5, off a Lady Bulldog error before extending the gap. The Blazers closed the second set on a 3-0 run to claim the 25-17 victory and a 2-0 advantage at the break.
Alabama A&M led the third set early until an error gave UAB a 3-2 advantage that the Blazers extended to a 25-16 set three victory to secure the sweep.
Deshotel led the Blazer offense with 11 kills while attacking at a .241 clip. The junior tallied seven digs and three block assists to total 12.5 points in the match.
Junior Amy Hunter and freshmen Kassidy Sullivan and
Hunter led the team with a .714 attack percentage while eight total Blazers recorded attacking percentages at .500 or better against the Lady Bulldog defense.
Junior Amber Treace set up the Blazer offense with 28 helpers while guiding UAB to its best team hitting percentage of the season at a .370 clip. Schroer led the defense with 15 digs in the match.
Ashundria McNeal led Alabama A&M with 16 kills and eight digs for 17 total points.
UAB returns to conference action on Friday as the Blazers host Florida Atlantic. First serve is set for 7 p.m. CT.
