BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's soccer team fought hard for 90 minutes, but fell to No. 5 Coastal Carolina, 3-1, Monday night at West Campus Field.
"I thought overall we played pretty well," head coach Mike Getman said. "We out possessed the number five team in the nation. We outshot them. I thought we did everything we wanted to do, except win the match."
The Blazers (3-5-0) outshot the Chanticleers (5-0-1), 12-8, and kept possession most of the match, but didn't have the rolls go their way on the offensive side.
"Sometimes when you play great teams, it doesn't go your way," Getman added. "We feel like we've just been very unlucky this season. It's hard when you play well and lose. I thought we played well and I thought we did most of the things we want to do, but it just didn't go our way again.
Sergio Camargo gave the Chanticleers their first tally early, breaking away from the UAB defense in the sixth minute to make it a 1-0 match. He followed 32 minutes later with a score off a rebound to send the two squads to the break at 2-0.
Freddy Ruiz gave the Blazers life in the 67th minute when Coastal Carolina was called for a handball. Ruiz's penalty kick shot was good, cutting the lead in half, 2-1. Miguel Gutierrez pushed the advantage back to two scores six minutes later in what was a final score of 3-1.
Ruiz finished with two shots on goal, as did Chandler Stroupe, who made the first start of his Blazer career Monday night. UAB keeper Joe Kuzminsky finished the match with two saves.
UAB returns to the pitch Friday for its first Conference USA road match of the season at top-25 Old Dominion.
