ATLANTA, Ga. -- The UAB track and field team put the finishing touches on the Georgia Tech Invitational Saturday behind a personal-best distance from Shanice Leach in the triple jump.
Leach turned in a jump of 39-05.00 and a fifth-place finish in the event to surpass her previous best of 39-00.50 she posted last weekend at the South Alabama Invitational. Sophomore Ali Meister was also strong in field events, as she recorded a personal-best distance in the long jump with a mark of 18-03.75 en route to a seventh-place finish on Friday.
In running events, Rebecca Evans placed eighth in the 1500 meters with a personal best time of 4:34.18, while freshman Victoria Roughsedge raced to a time of 4:47.81 in the event for a new personal best.
"We had an up and down weekend," UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. "We saw some very good jumps and races, but there were still some opportunities we were unable to take advantage of. We have one more meet next weekend to try and put everything together."
UAB also competed at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., as Jenna Wesley posted the second-best time in her career in the 800 meters with a mark of 2:10.71. Junior Hannah Coffin competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase and turned in a mark of 11:03.71 to post the second-best time of her career.
"This was a learning experience for both Jenna and Hannah," UAB associate coach Matt Esche said. "We came into this meet with high expectations, but we fell just a bit short of where we wanted to be. However, both runners had great times, so we look to build off this performance as we prepare for conference championships."
UAB takes part in its last meet before Conference USA Championships next weekend when the Blazers travel to Starkville, Miss., to compete at the Jace LaCoste Invite.
