BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB track and field team takes part in the first of two straight meets in the state of Alabama when the Blazers make the short trip to Auburn on Friday to compete at the Tiger Track Classic from Hutsell-Rosen Track.
Competition begins Friday at 2 p.m. with the men's hammer throw and concludes at 8:10 p.m. with the men's 5000 meters. Day two opens Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the women's pole vault and finishes with the men's 3000 meters at 6:30 p.m.
"We are looking to take a step forward in all events this weekend at Auburn," UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. "Everyone has shown signs of improvements and we hope the team can start to put some good things together. We expect the jumpers to build off our last few meets, and we feel like our sprinters are running much better."
UAB enters the weekend following a strong performance at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival in its most recent meet. Senior Jenna Wesley turned in two personal-best times, beginning with a time of 4:33.81 in the 1500 meters en route to a second-place finish in her heat. Wesley also recorded a third-place finish in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 2:11.77.
Junior Hannah Coffin made her 3000-meter steeplechase debut at San Francisco State and picked up a 16th-place finish with a time of 10:47.11. Her time ranks her 38th in the event on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List. The top 48 marks in each event automatically qualify for the NCAA East Regional from Jacksonville, Fla.
Senior Lucy Crookes posted a personal-best time in the 10,000 meters to highlight competition at the Stanford Invitational. Crookes raced to a time of 34:26.06 and currently ranks 19th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List.
