AUBURN, Ala. -- Jenna Wesley raced to an outdoor personal-best time in the 800 meters and a 10th-place finish on Saturday to highlight competition for the UAB track and field team at the Tiger Track Classic from the Hutsell-Rosen Track on the campus of Auburn University.
Wesley turned in a time of 2:09.48 to surpass her previous top mark of 2:11.76 she registered earlier in the season at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Sophomore Rebecca Evans also posted a personal-best time in the 800 meters, finishing with a mark of 2:16.58 to better her previous fastest time of 2:17.95.
Sophomore Melany Frierson finished in 18th place in the 100 meters with a personal-best time of 12.17.
Senior Avril McGhee competed in the triple jump and recorded a distance of 38-05.50 en route to a 14th place finish. Sophomore Shanice Leach followed in 15th place with a mark of 37-10.00.
"The triple jumpers battled through some rough winds to finish with season-best marks," UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. "Avril is getting healthier and you could see it in her jumps. Shanice improved as well and hopefully she can continue to progress as the season goes on."
McGhee went on to register a personal-best distance of 16-05.75 in the long jump on Saturday. Freshman Zieandrea Bridges placed 17th in the shot put following an outdoor personal-best distance of 41-03.00.
Sophomore Hannah Hensley placed 17th in the javelin throw with a distance of 103-03.00, while fellow sophomore Ali Meister took 19th in the event following her mark of 98-11.00.
"Ali and Hannah got some good throws in as they prepare for the heptathlon next week," Thomas added. "Those are good marks for the both of them, so hopefully they can put it all together next week."
Meister also tallied a personal-best time of 14.47 in the 100-meter hurdles on her way to a 23rd place finish. The Spencer, Iowa, native also posted a distance of 18-01.00 in the long jump.
Also in field events, freshman Aisha Nelson jumped to a height of 5-05.00 in the high jump to secure a 15th-place finish.
"We had another very good meet," Thomas added. "Every time we looked up someone else was setting a new personal record. We need to stay healthybut we are coming along fine and we hope to keep that going."
