BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's soccer team puts the finishing touches on the 2017 regular season this weekend when the Blazers host Middle Tennessee Friday at 7 p.m. on Senior Night at BBVA Compass Field. UAB closes the weekend by playing host to WKU Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Blazers will honor seniors Rachel Green, Morgan Terry, Katherine Foster, Bri Kuestersteffen, Morgan Key-Adams and Amy Brewer in a ceremony before kickoff.
"I am so excited to honor such a great group of players and people on Friday," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "In the short time I have had with them, they have taught me so much about being a coach and I hope that we have been able to make their final season special. UAB women's soccer will miss them deeply."
The first 100 UAB students in attendance will receive free pizza courtesy of Papa John's and all children wearing a youth soccer jersey will be provided a free mini soccer ball and $1 admission.
UAB (11-3-3, 5-2-1) opens the weekend in fifth place in Conference USA but sit just three points out of second place. The Blazers split two games last weekend with a 1-0 win over Southern Miss and a 1-0 setback to Louisiana Tech.
Brewer enters her final homestand leading the UAB offense with 23 points on nine goals and five assists, which includes four game-winning goals. The Peachtree City, Ga., native ranks third in Conference USA and fourth in goals. Sophomore Megan Hudgens stands second on the team with 19 points on seven goals and five assists, while Green has added seven goals and three assists for 17 points.
Keeper Kelsey Daugherty picked up her sixth shutout last Friday and now owns a league-best 0.78 goals against average. She's also third in the conference with 82 saves and second with a .854 save percentage.
Middle Tennessee split last weekend after losing at home to Louisiana Tech before responding with a home win over Southern Miss. The Blue Raiders, however, have won three of their last four road games and enter the weekend with an 8-8-0 overall record and a 5-4-0 mark in league play. Middle Tennessee currently sits in sixth place in the league standings and is just one point behind UAB.
Middle Tennessee freshman forward Peyton Depriest leads the Blue Raiders and ranks first in Conference USA with 13 goals. Depriest also has three assists and is tied for the league-lead with 29 points. Keeper Sydney Chalcraft has played every minute in goal and owns a 1.66 goals against average to go along with 81 saves and three shutouts.
"I knew before coming to Conference USA that our league would be very competitive and each game brings a new challenge," Demers added. "With how tight the standings are, these games are important in order to extend our season and stay together as a team."
WKU hosts Marshall Friday at 6 p.m. before making the trek south to Birmingham. UAB and WKU were originally scheduled to play Sunday, Oct. 8, but heavy rains in and around the area forced the game to be postponed.
