Loxley, Ala. - R.J. Keur fired a tournament-low five-under par (67) in the final round of the Steelwood Collegiate to capture first-place individual honors. It is the first individual tournament title for a UAB golfer since teammate Taylor Eyster won the 2016 Conference USA Championship.
Keur, who finished a cumulative -6 (71-72-67) for the tournament, won the event by two strokes. His final round consisted of a 30 on his first nine holes, which included six birdies.
"What an awesome performance by R.J. today. The conditions were very difficult - cold and windy- and to shoot a 30 on his first nine holes was one of the best nine holes you will see in college golf. I am proud of the way he and the team responded to adverse conditions and this will motivate us in the offseason," head coach Mike Wilson said.
Keur's previous best finish occurred last March when he notched a second-place result at the Schenkel Invitational. He has now finished four of his five fall tournaments at or under par.
His victory came against a field with some of the top golfers in the NCAA, including No. 1 Davis Riley (+1) of Alabama. Other notable participants that Keur bested include No. 33 Cooper Mussleman of Kentucky (+12) and No. 46 Lee Hodges of Alabama (+2).
The Blazers turned in their best showing of the weekend with a 291 (+3), which was the second lowest team score in Sunday's final round. In addition to Keur, Murray Naysmith carded his second consecutive 73 (+1) while senior Taylor Eyster fired his best round of the tournament with a two-over par 74.
John Hayden and Naysmith each tied for 29th as both finished at +12 for the weekend, followed by Eyster (+16) and John Racciatti at +17.
Alabama (+2) took home top honors as a team, followed by Kennesaw State (+3), South Alabama (+15), Kentucky (+17) and Rice (+23). UAB (302-298-291) fell just short of a top-five finish at +27. The sixth-place result was the best of the fall schedule.
Freshman Nick Robillard, competing as an individual, also had an impressive final round and shot his lowest score of the weekend with an even-par 72 to finish in third-place (T42 overall) among individual competitors.
The Blazers will take a three-month hiatus before resuming play in the spring with the Gator Invitational February 17-18.
