Blazers to Face Richmond in Cayman Islands Classic First Round

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands. – The UAB men's basketball team takes to the road for the first time this season when the Blazers head to George Town, Cayman Islands, to face Richmond on Monday at 4 p.m. (CT) in the opening round of the Cayman Islands Classic.
UAB (3-0) closed a three-game homestand Thursday evening with an 81-57 victory over LeMoyne-Owen College behind 19 points and 12 rebounds from senior Chris Cokley. The Savannah, Ga., native has a double-double in every game this year and is the first Blazer since Rod Rucker in 2013 to post a double-double in three consecutive games. Cokley enters the tournament leading UAB with 19.0 points and 11.7 rebounds per game.
Freshman Zack Bryant added 14 points and four steals against the Magicians and ranks second on the team with 16.3 points per game. Senior William Lee also scored 14 points to go along with nine rebounds and three blocks in the victory. Lee, who ranks eighth all-time in Conference USA history with 232 career blocks, is also just 35 shy of becoming the all-time leader at UAB.
Richmond (0-2) opened its season with double-digit home losses to Delaware and Jacksonville State. The Spiders have yet to reach 64 points in a game and are being outscored by 23.0 points per game.
Sophomore guard De'Monte Buckingham leads Richmond with 15.5 points and 3.0 assists per game, while freshman Grant Golden paces the Spiders with 6.0 rebounds per game to go along with 9.5 points per game.
UAB and Richmond will meet on the hardwood for the sixth time in school history when the two teams battle on Monday. The Spiders own a 3-2 lead in the all-time series that dates back to the 2004-05 season. In the most recent match-up, Richmond turned in a 96-81 victory over UAB during the 2004-05 season. The Blazers posted wins over the Spiders in 2003 and in the 1989 NIT in Richmond.
UAB owns a 55-36 overall record against teams currently in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Blazer head coach Robert Ehsan is 1-0 against the league after turning in an 81-74 victory over George Washington last season in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.
