BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's basketball team continues a three-game homestand Wednesday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers host New Orleans at Bartow Arena.
UAB (7-4) enters play having won four of its last five games following a 90-58 victory over in-state foe Alabama A&M on Saturday in the BHM JAM. Sophomore Nate Darling scored a career-high 20 points, grabbed six rebounds and made four of the Blazers' 14 three-pointers to lead a trio in double figures.
Zack Bryant added 14 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range, while Jalen Perry chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Blazers outrebounded Alabama A&M 41-21 and enter the week first in Conference USA and sixth in the NCAA with a +11.4 rebounding margin. UAB has produced more rebounds than 10 of its 11 opponents and featured seven games with at least 40 rebounds.
UAB also finished 8-for-11 from the free throw line against the Bulldogs and ranks first in the nation with a .810 free throw percentage. The Blazers have shot over 80 percent from the charity stripe six times already this season.
Senior forward Chris Cokley leads the Blazers on offense with 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The Savannah, Ga., native ranks sixth in Conference USA in scoring and third in rebounding while standing 22nd in the NCAA with five double-doubles.
Bryant (14.0 ppg), Darling (10.7 ppg) and William Lee (10.1 ppg) also score in double figures for a Blazer team that has scored 90 points five times this season, which ranks UAB third in Conference USA in scoring offense with 83.0 points per game.
New Orleans (3-7) snapped a two-game losing streak on Monday with a 107-59 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle to improve to 3-0 at home. The Privateers, however, have lost all seven road games and have failed to score 70 points in any of those contests.
Senior forward Travin Thibodeaux serves as the offensive catalyst for New Orleans with 15.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, while freshman guard Troy Green adds 8.9 points and a team-high 34 assists.
UAB and New Orleans will meet on the hardwood for the seventh time in school history and the first since 1992 when the two teams battle on Wednesday. The Blazers own a 4-2 lead in the all-time series that dates back to the 1979-80 season. UAB won the first three games in the series before New Orleans took the next two. Most recently, UAB posted a 54-50 victory during the 1991-92 season.
