GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The UAB women’s track & field team saw a busy week conclude on Saturday on the final day of the Florida Relays. The Blazers competed across a number of relays and added a personal-best from Keila Robertson.
"We had an up and down day,” said UAB head coach Kurt Thomas. “The shuttle hurdle raced well. Jenn, Ali, Kyla needed those races. The 4x1 got some good handoffs but didn't sprint their best. But they know what they are capable of. The 4x8 was in a fast race and didn't respond. The 4x2 ladies raced well. Keila jumped well in the triple jump and keeps progressing. This weekend was to give them a preview of a conference type meet with lots of races and high level competition. We had lots of freshman here and we need to learn from the good things that happened and the bad."
The 4x200 Meter Relay team of Shelbi White, Karri Green, Melaney Frierson and Kandiss Briggs raced well. They completed in 1:38.02 and garnered 23rd place. The mark was less than a second shy of the top five all-time in the UAB record books.
That quartet then teamed up for the 4x100 Meter Relay and turned in a solid performance with a time of 46.44. The Blazers also saw the 4x800 Meter Relay grouping of Lauren Capone, Marielle Lewis, Celestial Moon and Serena Martinez finish in a time of 9:26.57, the best time posted by the Blazers since 2015.
Robertson registered an outdoor PR in the Triple Jump at 11.72 meters. Her previous-best mark was 11.61 meters last week at the Samford Invitational.
The Blazers will stay in state next weekend as they compete in the Tiger Track Classic at Auburn April 7-8.
