Southern Miss Open Results
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UAB track & field team brought the regular season to a close with some good performances at the Southern Miss Open. The Blazers record five top-five finishes including one victory.
“We had an up and down meet,” said UAB head coach Kurt Thomas. “The field event athletes did a good job this weekend with Keila Robertson triple jump and Zieandrea Bridges throws. Ali Meister hurdled and jumped well. The conditions were very windy and hurt some running events. But Marielle Lewis won the 800m and Rebecca Evans ran a good race in the 1500. We need to get healthy, stay healthy and sharpen everything in the next two weeks for CUSA.”
The Blazers win came in the 800 Meter Run by Lewis. The freshman registered a time of 2:17.581, beating unattached runner Stephanie Barrett by .004 seconds. Celestial Moon also placed third in the event with a time of 2:17.82, a new outdoor PR for her.
Meister added top five placings for UAB in the in the 100 Meter Hurdles (second – 14.18) and Long Jump (fourth – 5.61 meters). The time in the hurdles was a new personal-best for the junior and moves her into sole possession of the 10th-fastest time in Conference USA this season.
The field events continued to show well with the likes of Robertson and Bridges putting up personal-bests. For Robertson it came in the Triple Jump with a 12.13-meter best and good for fourth place. That mark is good for seventh in C-USA. Bridges 47.21-meter Hammer Throw was the ninth-best at the open.
Rebecca Evans was the last to place in the top for the Green & Gold as she placed second.
UAB will have a week and a half off before embarking on El Paso, Texas for the Conference USA Championships from May 11-14.
