Blazers Return Home for Midweek Clash with Southern Miss

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Winners of eight of its last 10 games, the UAB men's basketball team returns home to face Southern Miss Thursday at 7 p.m. at Bartow Arena.

University Programs Board and the Undergraduate Student Government Association will host a tailgate at 5 p.m. and fans are encouraged to arrive early and tailgate on the Bartow Arena lawn at 5 p.m. Free food will be provided courtesy of Full Moon BBQ.
UAB (11-5, 2-1) won two road games last week and sits tied for fourth place in the Conference USA standings. The Blazers turned in a 75-44 victory over Florida Atlantic on Thursday and completed the weekend sweep Saturday by defeating FIU 75-64.
Senior forward Chris Cokley averaged 21.0 points and 9.5 rebounds last week in Florida and enters play against Southern Miss leading the Blazers on offense with an average of 17.4 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. The Savannah, Ga., native also stands second in the league and 29th in the NCAA with seven double-doubles.
Freshman Zack Bryant stands second on the team with 13.7 points per game and leads the Blazers with a .395 three-point percentage. Sophomore guard Nate Darling adds 10.1 points per game and senior William Lee paces the squad with 1.9 blocks per game and is only 11 more rejections away from becoming the school's all-time leader.
Southern Miss (9-8, 2-2) snapped its four-game losing streak by earning home victories over UTEP and UTSA last week. The Golden Eagles won both games by double digits and are tied for fifth in the league standings.
Junior guard Cortez Edwards tops the Southern Miss offense with 16.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Fellow guard Tyree Griffin is second on the team with 14.8 points per game, while Dominic Magee also scores in double digits with 11.2 points per game.
UAB and Southern Miss will meet on the hardwood for the 47th time in school history when the two teams battle on Thursday. The Blazers own a 29-17 lead and have won five straight in the all-time series that dates back to the 1978-79 season. In the most recent meeting, UAB turned in an 87-43 victory last season in Birmingham behind 20 points and a career-high six three-pointers from Darling. UAB is 17-5 all-time against Southern Miss in games played in Birmingham and has not lost to the Golden Eagles at Bartow Arena since 2013.
