Blazers Close Road Trip Saturday at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The UAB men's basketball team closes its two-game road trip Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT) when the Blazers travel to Huntington, W.Va., to battle Marshall from the Henderson Center.
UAB (13-6, 4-2) saw its four-game winning streak snapped Thursday with a 77-69 setback against first-place WKU. Five Hilltoppers scored in double figures to lead WKU to its seventh straight win.
Senior Chris Cokley scored 17points and added 11 rebounds for his team-leading eighth double-double of the season. The Savannah, Ga., native ranks sixth in Conference USA in scoring (17.8 ppg) and first in rebounding (9.3 rpg). Cokley is also shooting 58.6 percent from the field to go along with a team-best .861 free throw percentage.
William Lee finished with 11 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks on Thursday and enters play just five rejections shy of becoming UAB's all-time leader with 267. That figure will also catapult Lee into fourth place in Conference USA history. Overall, Lee averages 9.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game.
Freshman Zack Bryant also scored in double figures for the Blazers with 15 points and five assists against WKU. The reigning Conference USA Freshman of the Week ranks second on the team with 13.9 points per game and has scored in double figures in six consecutive games.
Marshall (13-6, 4-2) defeated Middle Tennessee 73-63 on Thursday to improve to 11-1 at home and move into a tie for fourth place with UAB in the league standings. The Thundering Herd features one of the top offenses in the NCAA and ranks first in Conference USA and 10th in the nation with 86.8 points per game. Marshall also paces C-USA with 17.8 assists per game and is second with a .760 free throw percentage.
Junior guard Jon Elmore leads the Marshall offense with 22.5 points per game and is second on the team with 5.1 rebounds per game. Fellow guard C.J. Burks adds 21.2 points per game and forward Ajdin Penava is responsible for 16.7 points and a team-best 8.9 rebounds per game.
UAB and Marshall will meet on the hardwood for the 26th time in school history when the two teams battle on Saturday. The Blazers own an 18-7 lead and have won eight of the last nine games in the all-time series that dates back to the 2003-04 season.
In the most recent meeting, Marshall defeated the Blazers 76-59 last season at the Henderson Center behind 25 points and five assists from Elmore. In the first match-up last season in Birmingham, UAB used 22 points and 17 rebounds from Lee to down the Thundering Herd 94-78. Overall, UAB is 9-3 all-time and has won seven of the last eight games at the Henderson Center.
