BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's basketball team takes to the road to begin the month of February by traveling to Charlotte, N.C., on Thursday at 6 p.m. (CT) to face Charlotte from Halton Arena in a game that will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
UAB (14-8, 5-4) has won five of its last eight games and sits one game behind Marshall for fifth place in the league standings. The Blazers have nine games remaining in the regular season and will face each of the four teams ahead of them in the standings.
Senior forward Chris Cokley continues to serve as the offensive catalyst for a UAB offense that averages 78.8 points per game, which ranks third in Conference USA. Cokley averages 18.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game and stands sixth in the league in scoring and first in rebounding.
Zack Bryant adds 13.5 points per game and is second on the team with 69 assists and 23 steals. In addition, the Hastings, Fla., product is only 54 points shy of setting a new UAB single-season record for the most points by a freshman.
Sophomore Nate Darling also scores in double figures for UAB with 10.4 points per game to go along with a team-high 41 three-pointers. Senior William Lee has double-doubles in three of his last four games and is responsible for 9.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. Lee recently became UAB's all-time record holder for blocked shots and is only 30 away from 300 for his career.
Charlotte (5-14, 1-7) suffered its sixth straight loss on Saturday when the 49ers dropped an 88-66 decision to Old Dominion. It's also the fifth consecutive home loss for a Charlotte team that has not won at Halton Arena since Nov. 24.
Junior guard Jon Davis leads Charlotte with 15.5 points per game and 94 assists, while guard Andrien White adds 14.3 points per game and ranks first on the team with 5.1 rebounds per game.
UAB and Charlotte will meet on the hardwood for the 47th time in school history when the two teams battle on Thursday. The Blazers own a 30-16 lead and have won four in a row in the all-time series that dates back to the 1979-80 season. In the most recent match-up, UAB eliminated Charlotte from the 2017 Conference USA Tournament with a 74-73 win over the 49ers. The Blazers also beat Charlotte 82-69 last year at Bartow Arena in the only meeting of the regular season.
