BIRMINGHAM – With one win under its belt to begin the 2018-19 campaign, the UAB men's basketball team continues its season-opening three-game homestand on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when it welcomes New Orleans to Bartow Arena.
The Blazers are winners of 11-straight non-conference home games and boast a 41-6 record in such games since the 2012-13 season. UAB is 14-2 in those games under head coach Robert Ehsan.
"We are excited to get back to work against a quality opponent in New Orleans," Ehsan said." Having the week off has been good for our guys to get rested and healthy, while allowing us to continue to prepare as we enter the heart of our non-conference season. The guys are ready to get to back to work."
UAB (1-0) got the season off to a great start on November 6, defeating Mercer 75-67 in Bartow Arena. Senior Jalen Perry led a quartet of Blazers in double figures with 16 points against the Bears, followed by Zack Bryant (12 points, 5 assists), Tavin Lovan (10 points, 7 rebounds) and Lewis Sullivan (10 points, six rebounds).
The Blazer defense played a big role in the season-opening win, forcing the Bears to commit 18 turnovers with the help of eight steals and six blocks. Free throws also played a factor in the win after the Blazers went 29-for-35 from the charity stripe, including knocking down 9-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes of the game.
New Orleans (2-1) will be playing in its fourth game of the season when it squares off with UAB. In their last game, the Privateers emerged with an 87-59 win over Pensacola Christian College on the back of 13 points from Bryson Robinson.
Senior Ezekiel Charles leads New Orleans in scoring through three games played, averaging 11.0 points per contest, while Robinson is the only other Privateer averaging in double figures with 10.7 points per game.
The two teams will play for the eighth time when they meet on Wednesday, with UAB leading the all-time series 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the friendly confines of Bartow Arena. The two teams played last season in Birmingham, with the Green and Gold emerging with a hard-fought 74-67 victory over the Privateers.
