BIRMINGHAM – A major milestone awaits the UAB men's basketball team on Sunday at 4 p.m. as the Blazers look for program win No. 800 when they welcome in-state foe West Alabama to Bartow Arena to wrap up a three-game, season-opening homestand.
UAB (2-0) has opened the season in fine fashion with wins over Mercer (75-67) and New Orleans (75-68) to extend its non-conference home winning streak to 12-straight games.
The team is coming off its second win of the season, a 75-68 victory over the visiting New Orleans Privateers. Four Blazers scored in double figures in Wednesday night's game with sophomore Zack Bryant leading the way with 19 points. Senior Lewis Sullivan also had a monster game, recording his first career double-double after pouring in 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
UAB found its success against New Orleans courtesy of its defense, which forced 17 turnovers by the visitors and turned them into 31 points. The Blazers' ability to rebound also aided in the win, outrebounding the Privateers, 37-32.
Through two games this season, the Blazers have four players averaging in double figures, Bryant's 15.5 points per game. Jalen Perry is second on the team with 14.5 ppg, while Tavin Lovan (11.5) and Sullivan (10.5) round out UAB's double-figure performers.
Through two games this season, the Green and Gold are averaging 75.0 points per game and shooting a cool 42.7 percent (50-of-117) from the field.
West Alabama (1-2) claimed its first win of the season on November 15, defeating Selma College 87-68 at home. The Tigers were led by Tyrus Grayson and Ricky Dunnaway, who each scored 16 points and brought in eight rebounds in the victory.
Dunnaway leads the team offensively through three games this season with 11.3 points per game, while Darron Johnson (10.3 ppg) and Josh Fleming (10.0 ppg) join the junior in contributing double-figure scoring.
UAB and West Alabama will meet for just the second time when they take the hardwood on Sunday, with the Blazers leading the all-time series, 1-0. The two teams met in Birmingham on December 1, 2002, with UAB emerging with a 97-71 victory. Cedric Davis led the Blazers with a then career-high 19 points, while Demario Eddins added 16 points in the win.
The Blazers boast a 2-0 record against opponents from the Gulf Coast Conference entering the game with the Tigers. The Blazers last faced a Gulf Coast foe last season when it defeated Mississippi College, 90-53, on November 26, 2017.
