12/3/2018 4:17:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM – With a four-game stint away from home in the books, the UAB men's basketball team returns to Birmingham for the first time in a little over two weeks when it welcomes newly appointed Division I members North Alabama to Bartow Arena on Tuesday, December 4, for a 7 p.m. tip.
Tuesday's matchup will be the first between the two programs and the third time this season that the Blazers will be playing an opponent for the first time. UAB is 2-0 against first-time opponents after wins against Mercer and Canisius.
UAB (5-2) is off to its best start since 2013-14 after earning its fifth win of the season by defeating Alabama A&M in Huntsville, 67-57. Lewis Sullivan and Tavin Lovan led four Blazers in double figures in that game with 12 points apiece.
Sophomore Zack Bryant has been the leader of the Blazers' offense this season, averaging 12.9 points per game. Bryant has scored in double figures in four of the team's seven contests, including a 26-point outing against Canisius in the AdvoCare Invitational.
Defensively, the team ranks fourth in Conference USA and 52nd in the NCAA in scoring defense, holding teams to 64.6 points per game. Rebounding has been another contributing factor to UAB's early-season success, ranking 36th nationally in rebounding margin (7.3) and 29th nationally in offense rebounds per game (13.7).
North Alabama (2-6) is under the guidance of first-year head coach Tony Pujol and is led by Jamari Blackmon (17.0 ppg) and Kendarius Smith (11.4 ppg). The Lions are currently riding a three-game losing streak, with their most recent loss a 76-65 home defeat to in-state foe Jacksonville State.
UAB is 28-8 all-time against opponents from the Atlantic Sun Conference and is 1-0 against ASUN opponents under Robert Ehsan. That lone victory over an ASUN team came last season against Jacksonville, a 96-67 win, in the season opener.
Prior to Tuesday's game, fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to help with the UAB Toy Drive and take pictures with Santa Claus. Fans will also have the opportunity to take pictures with the football C-USA Championship trophy, which will be on display on the concourse prior to the game.
Individual season tickets for the 2018-19 UAB men's basketball campaign are on sale and start as low as $105 in Blaze's Corner. New this season is the Family Four Pack which includes four season tickets for a total cost of $400 along with the Flex Pack for $125. Mini plans are also now available here.
