Blazers Continue Road Trip Saturday at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UAB men's basketball team continues a three-game road trip Saturday at 4 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to face Southern Miss at Reed Green Coliseum.
UAB is 1-0 this season against Southern Miss and has won the last six meetings in the series with the Golden Eagles after turning in an 86-75 victory Jan. 11 at Bartow Arena. In that game, sophomore Nate Darling scored 20 points and made six three-pointers to lead four Blazers in double figures. Darling, who averages 10.2 points per game for UAB, averages 20.0 points and shoots 75.0 percent (12-for-16) in two career games against Southern Miss.
Senior Chris Cokley added 18 points and eight rebounds in the first meeting against Southern Miss. Cokley ranks sixth in Conference USA in scoring with 17.8 points per game and first in rebounding with 9.5 rebounds per game. Additionally, the Savannah, Ga., native leads the league and ranks 13th in the NCAA with 13 double-doubles.
Freshman Zack Bryant notched a career-high 19 points in the first game with Southern Miss and currently ranks second on the team with 12.9 points per game. Bryant enters play Saturday needing just two points to set a single-season school record for points by a freshman with 350.
Senior forward William Lee chipped in with 16 points against the Golden Eagles in game one and averages 9.3 points and 6.4 rebounds for a UAB team that ranks 13th in the NCAA with a +7.0 rebounding margin. The Selma, Ala., native ranks first all-time at UAB and fourth in Conference USA history with 285 career blocks and is 15 away from 300.
Southern Miss (13-14, 6-8) sits in ninth place in the Conference USA standings after dropping a 72-62 decision at home to Middle Tennessee on Thursday. Despite the loss, Southern Miss is 10-2 at home this season.
Junior guard Cortez Edwards leads the Southern Miss offense with 15.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, while fellow guard Tyree Griffin adds 15.2 points per game and has delivered a team-high 162 assists. Dominic Magee also scores in double figures for the Golden Eagles with 12.0 points per game.
