Blazers Play Alabama State in Mid-Week Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Fresh off its opening weekend sweep, the UAB baseball team puts its perfect record on the line when it plays a home-and-home mid-week series against Alabama State. Game one is set for Tuesday at 6 p.m. from the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex and game two is at 4 p.m. from Regions Field on Wednesday.
UAB opened the 2018 season with three wins over Bowling Green for its 12th opening weekend sweep in program history.
Isaiah Gonzales-Montoya was a dominant member of the Blazers' pitching staff, combining for three perfect innings with three strikeouts. The senior was credited with the win on Friday and the save on Saturday.
Offensively, the Blazers are led by Carter Pharis who is hitting a team-best .545 with six hits, four RBI and six total bases.
Zack Davis has also proved to be a tough out early in the season as the redshirt sophomore ranks 10th in the NCAA in stolen bases (3) and stolen bases per game (1.0). He also leads the team in slugging percentage with a .625 mark and a team-best two doubles.
Alabama State went 2-1 on opening week after competing in the Andre Dawson Classic in New Orleans, La. The Hornets picked up wins against Prairie View A&M and New Orleans before falling to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the final game of the tournament.
Hunter Phillips leads the Hornets with a .600 batting average. He tallied two runs on three hits with one RBI and three total bases over the opening weekend of play.
The Hornets will send Ivanniel Vazquez to the mound on Tuesday while Matthew Calvert will get the nod for the Blazers. Both are making their first starts of the season.
UAB and Alabama State are meeting for the 30th time in program history with the Blazers holding a 25-3 record including a perfect 15-0 mark at home.
