BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's basketball team plays its first home game since Feb. 10 when the Blazers return to Bartow Arena Thursday at 7 p.m. to host Marshall on beIN Sports.
UAB (17-12, 8-8) sits in sixth place in Conference USA and is one game ahead of North Texas (7-9) and FIU (7-9) with two games remaining for all three teams. The Blazers would clinch the No. 6 seed in the Conference USA Tournament Thursday with a win over Marshall and a North Texas loss to UTSA. Any FIU loss would eliminate the Panthers from leapfrogging UAB in the standings, as the Blazers own the head-to-head tiebreaker with their 75-64 win at FIU earlier this season.
Senior forward Chris Cokley paces UAB on offense with 17.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game while leading Conference USA with 13 double-doubles. The Savannah, Ga., native enters his final two games in Bartow Arena ranked third all-time in school history in scoring (1,593) and second in rebounding (831).
Freshman Zack Bryant ranks second on the team and 28th in Conference USA with 13.1 points per game. The Hastings, Fla., native recently set the single-season school record for points in a season and is just 21 shy of 400. Sophomore Nate Darling adds 9.8 points per game and has made a team-high 53 three-pointers.
William Lee averages 9.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game and is 13 rejections away from 300 for his career. Lee became UAB's all-time leading shot blocker earlier this season and currently ranks fourth all-time in Conference USA history. In addition, Lee has the third-most career blocks (287) of any active player in the NCAA.
Marshall (20-9, 11-5) has won six of its last seven games and stands in fourth place in the Conference USA standings. The Thundering Herd own a 5-7 record away from home but have won their last three road games.
Junior guard Jon Elmore leads Marshall and Conference USA in scoring (22.6 ppg) and assists (6.9 apg), while guard C.J. Burks is second on the team and third in the league with 21.3 points per game.
Forward Ajdin Penava adds 16.2 points, 8.9 rebounds and 4.4 blocks per game for a Thundering Herd team that leads Conference USA with 85.0 points per game.
UAB and Marshall will meet on the hardwood for the 27th time in school history when the two teams battle on Thursday. The Blazers own an 18-8 lead and have won eight of the last 10 games in the all-time series that dates back to the 2003-04 season. In the most recent match-up, Marshall defeated UAB 86-78 in overtime earlier this season (Jan. 20) behind 17 points 11 rebounds and six blocks from Penava. Cokley scored a career-high 28 points to go along with 14 rebounds for the Blazers. Overall, UAB is 9-3 all-time at home against Marshall and has won four straight at Bartow Arena. The Thundering Herd has not defeated UAB in Birmingham since 2012.
