UAB (15-9, 6-5) split a pair of road games last week and sits in sixth place in the league standings. The Blazers, however, are just two games out of second place and still play four of the teams ahead of them in the standings.
Senior forward Chris Cokley continues to lead a UAB offense that ranks third in Conference USA with 77.9 points per game. The Savannah, Ga., native leads the Blazers with 18.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game and ranks sixth in the league in scoring and second in rebounding. Cokley also paces the league with 11 double-doubles and has more double-doubles than 11 other teams in Conference USA.
Zack Bryant is second on the team with 13.1 points per game and is only 36 points shy of setting a single-season school record for the most points by a freshman with 350. Sophomore Nate Darling adds 10.1 points per game and has made a team-high 41 three-pointers. Senior William Lee averages 9.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game and is closing in on 300 rejections for his career.
North Texas (13-10, 6-4) has won three in a row and is currently a half-game ahead of UAB in the league standings. The Mean Green, however, have lost their last two road games and are just 4-7 away from home this season.
Sophomore guard Roosevelt Smart leads North Texas with 19.0 points per game to go along with a team-high 82 three-pointers made. Fellow guard Ryan Woolridge adds 12.6 points per game and a team-best 5.9 assists per game. A.J. Lawson paces North Texas with 5.5 rebounds per game.
UAB and North Texas will meet on the hardwood for the sixth time in school history when the two teams battle on Thursday. The Blazers own a 3-2 lead and have won each of the last two in the all-time series that dates back to the 1997-98 season. In the most recent matchup, UAB defeated North Texas 54-50 behind 19 points, four rebounds and five blocks from Lee. The Blazers are 2-0 all-time at Bartow Arena against North Texas.
