UAB Falls to Western Michigan 3-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. – In its opening match of the Auto Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational, the UAB volleyball team fell to Western Michigan in four sets (18-25, 20-25, 25-22, 21-25).
UAB (8-4) struggled to get the offense going, committing an uncharacteristic 30 attack errors against WMU. Reigning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, Victoria Young, led the Blazers with 11 kills. Abby Carlile and Jillian Tingling each chipped in with eight.
Senior Emily Martinez scored three service aces and picked up 18 digs, leading the team in each category. Shelby Holderfield recorded 42 assists, three kills and seven digs on the night.
In the opening set UAB had the lead late, 17-16, but Western Michigan closed on a 9-1 run to take the set 25-18. The Green and Gold fell behind 13-6 in the second set but they kept chipping away and closed the Broncos' lead to three late. It wasn't enough however, as WMU took the set 25-20.
In the third set, UAB used two five-point runs and a four-point run to win the set. Down 11-5, the Blazers reeled off a first five-point run to trim the WMU lead to one at 11-10. After the Broncos responded with back-to-back points, UAB went on a four-point run to take the lead, 14-13.
Western Michigan (9-3) and UAB traded the lead three more times in the third set before the Blazers found themselves down 22-20. The Green and Gold stormed back with their second 5-0 run to claim the third set victory 25-22.
The fourth set saw UAB and WMU knotted at 5-5 when the Broncos took off on a 6-0 scoring run to bust open the set and take a 12-5 lead. The Blazers trimmed the lead to two points and then one point late in the set, but WMU finished on a 4-1 scoring run, winning the fourth set 25-21 and taking the match 3-1.

UAB will play twice on Saturday, Sept. 15, beginning at 10 a.m. with Michigan State before closing out the tournament against Albany at 4 p.m.
