MIAMI – Playing its 15th straight game on the road, the UAB volleyball dropped its conference opener at FIU in three sets (22-25, 21-25, 16-25) on Friday night at the Ocean Bank Arena.
Abby Carlile, Jillian Tinglin and Emily Rudolph were the top kill leaders for UAB with nine, six and five kills, respectively. Alex Kells picked up two service aces in the opening set and chipped in with seven digs.
Shelby Holderfield added 30 assists to her season total and now stands at 531 assists for the year. The sophomore setter picked up a double-double with 10 digs on the night.
The opening set began well for the Blazers as they took the lead from the start, getting out to an 18-10 advantage. FIU then mounted a come back, rattling off 12-straight points to take a 22-18 lead.
UAB (8-7, 0-1 C-USA) fought back, cutting the lead to three points, but it eventually fell 22-25 in the first set.
FIU (8-5, 1-0) dropped the first point of the second set but quickly reclaimed the lead and held on to it throughout the set, winning 25-21. The Panthers led wire-to-wire in the third set and had a five-point run late in the third to claim a 25-16 win and take the match 3-0.
"The biggest thing for us right now is managing our errors and being consistent," head coach Amy Pauly said. "Our focus is to keep increasing our volleyball IQ and decision making."
UAB was hamstrung all night by errors, committing 29 attack errors and eight service errors. The FIU net front presence was a factor as well with 12 blocks to UAB's three.
"One thing this group has been great at this year is their recovery skills and fight on the court," Pauly said. "It's something we will emphasize when we get into practice tomorrow and on the court Sunday."
Up Next:
UAB will stay in South Florida, playing Florida Atlantic on Sunday, September 23 at 11 a.m. from Boca Raton.
