BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Entering conference play, the UAB volleyball team takes its 8-6 record to FIU and then to Florida Atlantic this weekend, wrapping up a stretch of 16 games on the road that opened the season for the Blazers.
UAB will face off with FIU on Friday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Florida Atlantic on Sunday, September 23 for a noon match against the Owls. Both matches will be available via livestream on C-USA.tv with links found on the UAB volleyball schedule page.
Entering the weekend, UAB ranks in the top five in Conference USA in opponent hitting percentage (.194), kills per set (12.71), assists per set (12.00), aces per set (1.52) and in blocks per set (2.27).
"This is obviously a big weekend for us," head coach Amy Pauly said. "We had a solid start to the season but everything gets turned up a couple notches now that we're in conference play. However, we have to stay in system and play our game just like we have through the early part of the year."
FIU stands at 7-5 on the season, 5-1 when playing at home, while FAU leads the conference with a record of 9-3, 6-0 at home. UAB knocked off FIU in straight sets last season but fell to Florida Atlantic in three sets. The Blazers are 1-4 all-time against Florida Atlantic and 2-6 against FIU.
Sophomore Abby Carlile leads the team in attacks racking up 144 kills, averaging 3.13 kills per set. The outside hitter also has a hitting percentage of .296 on the season.
Shelby Holderfield added 93 assists to her season total this past weekend in the Spartan Invitational. She now sits at 501 assists through the first half of the season and is averaging 10.44 assists per set, good for third in the conference. Meanwhile, Emily Martinez has 144 digs, respectively, and ranks thirteenth in Conference USA.
