MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Playing on the road at Alabama State, the UAB volleyball team cranked up the offense and used a hitting percentage of .357 to sweep the Hornets on Tuesday night.
UAB (6-2) was led on the offensive end by reigning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, Abby Carlile, who tallied 16 kills on 25 attacks and finished the match with a .600 hitting percentage.
Sophomore setter Shelby Holderfield fed the attackers all night as she picked up 33 assists and chipped in with two kills and two service aces. Emma Mitchell posted nine kills on the night while tying for the team lead in digs with seven.
"Tonight was a really fun match," head coach Amy Pauly said. "Alabama State had an incredible crowd and it was another great test for us."
Trailing 24-21 in the opening set UAB stormed back, using a kill from Emma Mitchell and back-to-back attacking errors by Alabama State to tie the set 24-24. A third attack error by the Hornets gave UAB a 25-24 lead before ASU tied it up at 25-25. Another kill from Mitchell and an attacking error by Alabama State gave UAB the opening set win 27-25.
"Fighting back from down 24-21 showed a lot of maturity," Pauly said. "After that the team settled down and settled into our game plan. Overall, I'm very proud of how the team competed on the road."
Mitchell led UAB in the first set with seven kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Carlile scored six kills with a .500 hit percentage in the opening set.
The second set was never in doubt as the Blazers took control early and never let up. UAB continued its impressive hitting performance as it hit .417 percent, committing just two attack errors while picking up 12 kills.
Alabama State (3-5) was kept at bay on the offensive end as the Blazer defense held the Hornets to a .097 hitting percentage in the second.
It was more of the same in the third as the Blazers pulled away early and took the final set 25-13.
