BIRMINGHAM- The Blazers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over South Carolina Saturday night at BBVA Field.
UAB (2-8-1, 1-3-1) recorded its first conference win of the season thanks to a first half goal from freshman Teodor Thorvaldsen.
The Blazer's goal came in the 21st minute when Grayson Dupont's cross through the South Carolina defense found Chandler Shirley in the middle of the box. Thorvaldsen then buried Shirley's quick touch pass in the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
South Carolina (5-6-1, 0-4-0) outshot the Blazers 7-6 on the night. Six of the seven Gamecock shots came in the second half of action. Both teams registered only two shots on goal in the game.
"I am extremely proud of the performance tonight," said head coach Jeff Kinney. "The boys brought the grit and grind for the entire 90 minutes. Our back four and midfield group deserve a lot of credit as they dealt with a lot of set pieces and throw ins from South Carolina. Hopefully, we can take this and build on it going into another tough midweek match up."
The UAB victory snaps a five-game losing streak against the Gamecocks dating back to October of 2014. The Blazers move to 6-14-1 all time against South Carolina. The win also ends the Blazers worst regular season losing streak since 2016.
UAB will travel to Boone, N.C. Wednesday to take on Appalachian State in a midweek non-conference matchup at 6 p.m.
