UAB Women’s Basketball Hosts Boise State Friday Evening

BIRMINGHAM- UAB women's basketball will play host to Boise State for the consolation round of the preseason WNIT Friday evening at 4 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
After a hard-fought loss to Oklahoma in the second round of the WNIT the Blazers were knocked into the consolation bracket where they awaited the results of Boise State versus Missouri State. Missouri State defeated the Broncos 72-69 in Boise setting up a meeting with UAB in Birmingham slated for Friday.
UAB (1-1) started off slow against Oklahoma but found its stride late in the game as seniors Miyah Barnes and Trista Magee led the comeback effort that would eventually fall just short. Barnes put up a career high 25 points with five assists earning her Conference USA Co-Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career.
Barnes averaged a team-leading 18.0 points with 11 assists and eight rebounds in the first two games of the preseason WNIT.
The Blazers outshot their opponents in both games shooting a combined 40.3 percent from the field and 35.0 percent from three-point range.
Boise State (2-1) opened the WNIT with a convincing 82-57 win over Portland State in which four Broncos players posted double digit scoring performances. The Broncos then fell to Missouri State in a close contest in Boise to knock them out of the main tournament bracket.
The Broncos are paced by senior guard Riley Lupfer who is averaging 15.7 points per game along with Mallory McGwire a redshirt junior center who has recorded 13.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Boise State entered the 2019-20 season picked first in the Mountain West after a successful 2018-19 season which the Broncos won the Conference and Mountain West Tournament punching their ticket to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 13 seed. They finished the season ranked No. 39 in RPI after a heartbreaking overtime loss to Oregon State in the first round of the tournament.
The Broncos Braydey Hodgins was named preseason Mountain West Player of the Year after leading the team in scoring, three-point FG percentage, three-pointers made and free-throw percentage last season. McGwire is an Oregon transfer playing in her first season for the Broncos after sitting a year per transfer rules was selected as Preseason Newcomer of the Year. Hodgins and Lupfer were also named to the preseason All-Conference team.
"Boise State is a talented veteran team that has won the Mountain West the last three years with a lot of NCAA tournament experience," said head coach Randy Norton. "They are the favorite to win the Mountain West again this year. Our girls will be ready to play as we know it's another opportunity to play a very competitive team and learn more about where we are early in the season."
Friday marks the first ever meeting between the two schools and the fifth time UAB has faced a Mountain West opponent. The Blazers are 0-4 in each of the previous meetings with Mountain West schools, each of those losses coming on the road.
The game will tip off at 4 p.m. with the men's basketball game to follow. Fans who purchase a women's basketball ticket, which will be up for sale until halftime, will receive entry into the men's game against Utah Valley at 7 p.m.
"With a 4 p.m. start time we really want to encourage our Blazer fans and UAB students to come out and give us a home court advantage," added Norton.
