BIRMINGHAM – The UAB volleyball team took a hard-fought 3-1 loss on the road at Marshall Thursday night. After dropping the first two sets, the Blazers rallied to take set three with a chance to push the match to five sets, but ultimately fell short.
"One of the best characteristics of our team is that they have no quit. We are always going to work hard and give it our all," said coach Amy Pauly. "Unfortunately, we couldn't get all of our pieces going at once today, and it hurt us in the side out part of the game."
Player Spotlight
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Alex Kells had a career night, marking a personal best in kills with 20 and tying her previous career high 17 digs to lead the team and pick up her fifth double double of the year. True junior outside hitter Abby Carlile followed just behind Kells in both categories with 17 kills and 14 digs for her third double double this season, while true freshman setter Rachel Morse finished with 47 assists and nine digs.
"Alex had a great match anchoring us as a six rotation player tonight," said Pauly. "She is a competitor and really put forth a great match."
How It Happened
In a tightly contested match, UAB (12-14, 4-9 C-USA) edged Marshall (18-9, 9-5 C-USA) in a pair of categories. The Blazers led the Thundering Herd in kills (55-51) and assists (52-50).
UAB took a slight 8-6 advantage early in set one, but Marshall responded by taking 11 of the next 12 points to go up, 17-9. The Blazers would use a pair of three-point runs to close the gap to a four-point deficit, but the Thundering Herd took the final three points to clinch the set, 25-18.
Set two started out much like set one as UAB went up 10-9, but a five-point Marshall run soon after put the Thundering Herd in front, 15-11. The Blazers cut Marshall's lead to one this time to trail 19-18, but the Thundering Herd went on another tear to take four of the next five points and shortly win the set, 25-21.
Once again, UAB held a narrow lead at 11-10 starting out in set three. This time, the Blazers traded blows with Marshall, often taking two points to one up to a 21-17 lead. The Thundering Herd pushed back near the end to cut UAB's lead to one, but the Blazers finished off the set for the 25-23 win.
The early stages of set four looked like the previous three as Marshall clung to a 12-11 lead. From there, the Thundering Herd scored the next six points, but UAB responded with a five-point run of its own to trail 18-16. After both sides went back and forth up to a 22-19 Marshall lead, the Thundering Herd closed the door with the next three points for the 25-19 set win and 3-1 match win.
