UAB Defeats Montevallo 75-63

BIRMINGHAM – Tamell Pearson scored a career-high 16 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field in UAB's 75-63 victory over Montevallo on Saturday night at Bartow Arena.
Jalen Benjamin added 14 and Kassim Nicholson 10 for the Blazers (5-4). Tyreek Scott-Grayson dished out a career-high nine assists and Makhtar Gueye led all players with seven rebounds.
Ivan Smith scored 14 for the Falcons (6-4).
Montevallo got the early advantage as an 8-0 run gave them their largest lead of the game at six points when Cedrick Jackson's 3-pointer made the score 19-13 at 12:08 of the 1st half
UAB answered by scoring the next 14 points – seven by Pearson - to go ahead 27-19 at 7:36. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Benjamin gave the Blazers its first double-digit lead of the game at 41-29 with 1:50 remaining.
Nicholson's 3-pointer sent the game into halftime with UAB ahead 44-34.
The Blazers maintained a double-figure lead throughout the 2nd half. Gueye's jumper at 10:24 and Nicholson's basket at 7:47 gave UAB a pair of 20-point leads, the later at 66-46.
As a team, UAB made season-bests 28 field goals, 54.9 shooting percentage and 20 assists while the nine 3-pointers and 50 percent shooting from beyond-the-arc both tied season-highs.
The Blazers have a quick turnaround as they host North Alabama (5-5) on Tuesday. The Lions are coming off a 78-50 victory over Birmingham-Southern on Dec. 8. Last season, UAB was a 73-63 winner in the inaugural matchup.
