Big Second Half Lifts Memphis Over UAB 65-57

BIRMINGHAM – Jalen Benjamin scored a game-high 17 points, Tavin Lovan added 14 and Kassim Nicholson 10, but a big second half from No. 15 Memphis (8-1) gave the Tigers a 65-57 victory over UAB (4-4) on Saturday evening at Bartow Arena.
The game, which was UAB's annual Bartow Classic - honoring the Blazers' legendary coach Gene Bartow - was attended by 5,041 people.
Memphis' Precious Achiuwa's recorded a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. DJ Jeffries and Alex Lomax each scored 10 for the Tigers.
With the Blazers ahead by three points at the 11:06 mark of the first half, Will Butler's jumper started a 17-0 run over the next 5:42. During the run, five different UAB players scored. Makhtar Gueye's 3-pointer capped the run, giving the Blazers a 31-11 lead with 5:42 remaining.
UAB would hold a 40-26 advantage going into halftime.
However, Memphis outscored UAB 39-17 in the second half. Achiuwa's tip-in at 2:56 made the score 56-55 and put the Tigers ahead for good.
Butler led the Blazers with seven rebounds.
UAB's next game is Dec. 14 against Montevallo at Bartow Arena. The Blazers and Falcons now have a new tipoff time of 7:30 p.m.
