Blazers Trek to Ruston for Conference USA Series

BIRMINGHAM – Coming off of a shutout victory over cross town rival Samford, the UAB baseball team heads to Ruston, La., to pick up back up Conference USA play at Louisiana Tech. Game one is set for 6 p.m., followed by games two and three scheduled for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
UAB (12-14, 1-5 C-USA) heads to Louisiana Tech having won two straight contests, winning the series finale against Florida Atlantic and its midweek game over Samford. Zack Davis produced a career high four RBIs with three coming off of a bases clearing triple in the win over the Bulldogs on Tuesday. Davis leads the UAB offense with a .378 mark at the plate, the fifth highest average in C-USA.
Colton Schultz has been efficient offensively, ranking third in the league in RBIs (29) and RBIs per game (1.1). The Huntsville native has recorded at least one RBI in 17 games this season, including a four RBI day against Radford on March 2.
Graham Ashcraft is scheduled to get the start on the mound on Friday for the Blazers, followed by Tanner Rusk on Saturday with Tyler Gates projected to pitch the series finale on Sunday. Ashcraft has made two Friday starts this season, going a combined 7.2 innings with six earned runs scored on 11 hits with 10 strikeouts. Rusk has been a consistent member of the Blazers' weekend rotation, boasting a 3.00 ERA with a 1-1 record, allowing 10 runs on just 26 hits with 25 strikeouts, including a 10 K performance against Radford on March 2. Gates is making his second consecutive weekend start. The senior allowed three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks issued in UAB's win over Florida Atlantic.
Louisiana Tech (14-10, 2-4 C-USA) is coming off of a 9-4 loss to ULM on Tuesday night, but took 2-of-3 from Middle Tennessee last weekend in league play. The Bulldogs are hitting a combined .284 with 244 hits and 24 home runs. Mason Mallard leads the offense, batting .370 with 28 runs scored on 34 hits and 19 RBIs.
Matt Miller is scheduled to start on the mound on Friday for the Bulldogs, followed by Logan Robbins on Saturday and Logan Bailey on Sunday. Miller carries a 4.50 ERA and a 2-0 record. Robbins will be making his seventh start of the season, carrying a 7.96 ERA and a 2-2 record, while Bailey ranks second on the team in innings pitched (28.2) but has the highest ERA on the squad (8.48) and has a 2-3 record.
